Watt's Lane Citizen's Freedom of Movement is Under Threat
Nanthancode: “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” This famous quote is said by Martin Luther King Jr. If things are going like this sooner or later residence of Watt's Lane, Nanthancode needs to demand their freedom - freedom of movement.
Nanthancode, Watt's Lane is a narrow road where at a time only two cars can pass at opposite direction. But during school days school vans (private vehicle) and cars (student's parents') will be parked on each side of the road, which makes very difficult to travel, even for the pedestrians especially in the school peak hours. There was an incident happened a few months back when a 65-year-old lady, a Watt's Lane resident, needed urgent hospitalization during the 3:30 - 3:45 pm time. But because of the heavy traffic it was very difficult to even get her out of her home (If this happened in developed countries, one could have used the service of helicopter, but India is still developing). Thankfully, this particular lady got hospitalized after 4 pm and she is doing fine now.
The point that I would like to stress here is that the parents who are coming in cars to drop children can drop them at the starting point of Watt's Lane road to avoid the rush, but no one really cares about doing so and as a result there will be a heavy traffic in this narrow road. Time and again, the Residence Association has filed a number of complaints to the City Traffic Police, but in vain. Another headache that the residents facing here is the nuisance of Private Vans and their drivers. They will arrive at Watt's Lane Road at morning 9:30 and they will park their vans both sides of the road (irrespective of No Parking board) till evening 3:30 pm and at the same time they will play music in the van very louder which causes nuisances to the citizens. This kind of parking also causes traffic problem even in non-peak hours. These van drivers hardly follows any rules and they do not even hear what the traffic police says!!!
The most pathetic thing is that the Holy Angels School Administration does not have any kind of Corporate Social Responsibility to solve this menace. I had a few chances to have a word with the Principal of this school but apart from her promise of arranging necessary traffic police, the residents still have not got any kind of solution. I do not know how these schools are going to produce good citizens if they have got this kind of non-empathetic and non-altruistic administrators at the helm. The most sarcastic thing is that the parents' of the students are top bureaucrats and top police officials and I wonder that may be reason why the residents are not getting a permanent solution to this problem (which is a nonsense news in the Indian scenario). I hope the next time when someone in Watt's Lane needs an emergency hospitalization, they will get it at the right time (hope this traffic menace will get a solution by then).
